Achieving World-Class Standards of Financial Management

Welcome to the website for the Government Finance Profession (GFP). Dame Mary Keegan is Head of the Government Finance Profession. Our community of over 7,500 Finance Professionals (split equally between trainee and fully qualified accountants) is the largest professional grouping in central government and it is growing all the time.

We are represented within all the Professional Skills for Government (PSG) career groupings (e.g Policy, Operational, and Corporate Services Delivery) across more than 50 departments and their agencies. Finance Professionals play a crucial role in driving forward better financial management in these organisations and embedding finance in the management process.

As a core skill within the PSG programme, better financial management is now not just a responsibility of the finance department. To help raise awareness of it, free PSG compliant training is now available for all non-finance staff at http://lovelearning.nationalschool.gov.uk

Finance Professionals, however, will continue to play an increasing role at the heart of decision support within their organisations and be required to demonstrate leadership and broader experience as part of their own career advancement.

The Finance Professionalism team in HM Treasury organises networking events for GFP members at all levels. This website will keep our professional community informed of ongoing initiatives to collate and disseminate best practice through our journal 'Gasette', working groups and conferences.
