Finance Professionals

Gateway Standards

In addition to Delivering Value for Money being a core competency in the new Civil Service Competency Framework, the Government Finance Profession has defined the gateway and expertise required of Finance Professionals in government, at Grade 7, SCS Payband 1 and SCS Payband 3 level. Furthermore we have defined broader experience requirements at PB1.

The gateway and expertise is cumulative as you progress through the grades. For those who are Finance Professionals in a policy or operational delivery area, you are also expected to exhibit the expertise of those areas.

The Government Finance Profession makes no apologies for setting the bar high because we believe that central government deserves the best Finance Professionals. The Gateway Standards are also an important driver for better financial management.

Advancement means that in addition to your CCAB qualification, you must gain the experience that comes from doing various finance jobs for sufficient periods of time. You are also required to demonstrate leadership abilities and broader experience - as well as complying with your professional accountancy institute continuous professional development (CPD) requirements.

The Government Finance Profession acknowledges that in certain roles you do not have to be a qualified accountant to work in finance at Grade 7 level.
