Professional Skills for Government (PSG)

Those of you at Grade 7 and above are now required to comply with the requirements of the PSG framework (see below). For those of you below Grade 7, the way PSG is applied has been determined by your own department or agency in line with its own particular skills needs. Please contact your local HR team to find out how PSG applies to you under these circumstances.

Background

Professional Skills for Government represents a different and more structured way of thinking about Civil Service jobs and careers. It is a major, long-term programme designed to ensure that no matter where you work, you have the right mix of skills and expertise to enable your department or agency to deliver effective services.

The key elements of Professional Skills for Government framework are:

  • Moving towards a Service where all staff will be expected to have the core professional skills and experience needed to do their job well. This process will give professional recognition to those skills and experiences of staff formerly thought of as “generalists” and “specialists”.
  • Career development is being taken forward within three career groupings: Operational Delivery, Policy Delivery and Corporate Services Delivery. These have parity of esteem and all provide routes to Board level. They are not new silos: there is movement between groupings and they incorporate existing professions.
  • People will need to be able to demonstrate skills and expertise in four areas at the appropriate level in relation to their job and chosen career path. These will be tested at 3 key career gateways: Entry to Grade 7, to Senior Civil Service (SCS) Pay Band 1 and Pay Band 3

Training for PSG Financial Management (FM) Core Skills
