Scene Setting for Day 2 Workshop – Gary Leyshon, Duncan Haigh and Malcolm Jessup, BPP Professional Education Professional Education and “The Select Committee”

Overview of the Workshop:

  • The purpose of the exercise is to link the academic syllabus with the real business world, to highlight the importance of interpersonal skills, communication, negotiation and presentation in the context of decision-making - vogue themes among the Accounting Institutes.
  • Complying with the overall conference theme of sustainability, delegates will be asked to consider a major project, demonstrate how stakeholders will be affected, their likely reaction and how to manage these reactions.
  • These stakeholders are likely to be for example: The company tendering for the work; Media; Shareholders; General public; Government; Sustainable Energy Pressure Group

Structure:

  • Pre course information will be issued to delegates to simulate a business briefing.
  • Students will be asked to consider the effect on a wide group of stakeholders in the decision making process.
  • Specific stakeholders will be randomly pre allocated to groups of delegates.
  • Team creation, task allocation and role development skills will ensue to demonstrate control over resource in decision making under significant time constraints.
  • Presentation of the key aspects of the case for each of the stakeholder groups.
  • The presentations would be expected to cover the financial and non-financial arguments for and against the project.
