HM TREASURY PRESS RELEASE (Issued 17 March 2008)

HM Treasury has appointed Jon Thompson as Head of the Government Finance Profession.  Jon will replace Dame Mary Keegan who is retiring on 31 March after 4 years at HM Treasury.

NAO REPORT 'MANAGING FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO DELIVER BETTER PUBLIC SERVICES' (Issued 3 March 2008)

On 28 February 2008, the NAO published the above report together with the summaries of the departmental surveys on which much of its conclusions are based.

The NAO's principal recommendations support government policy regarding there being a qualified Finance Director at Board level in every department.  Additionally, they also emphasised the following:

- ensuring that a full assessment of the financial implications of policy proposals is included in all submissions to Ministers and Board members;

- presenting integrated financial and operational performance data to the Board to enable them to improve the evidence on which they base resource allocation decisions;

- improving financial skills and awareness amongst non-finance staff;

- doing more to improve forecasting capabilities, and

- making best use of non-Executive Directors.
